Adirondack Arc 9 Mile Canoes and Kayaks draws 74 boats
The Adirondack Arc 9 miler starts at the Route 3/30 Boat launch. Paddlers follow the river downstream to the Route 30 Bridge before turning left to finish at the Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club. A combination of novice and experienced paddlers competed across numerous boat categories. High water and moderate temperatures led to many fast times across a competitive field. A large contingent of solo kayaks and canoes made for some great races in those classes. Overall winners included John Ders with the fastest kayak time of the day completing the 9 mile race in 53:42; Jim Mallory with the fastest solo canoe time at 1:00:34; and Bill Robinson and Alan Linck turning in the fastest tandem canoe time of 56:20.

The Adirondack Arc 9 Mile Canoe and Kayak Races to Tupper Lake were held Saturday, June 4. Paddlers from across New York State, Vermont and New Hampshire came to the Tip Top Town to paddle the Raquette River in the first of a series of paddle sport events sponsored by The Adirondack Arc. The Adirondack Arc is a non – profit grass roots organization that enriches the lives of people with developmental disabilities. People from the Arc community are involved in all aspects of the race series from registration and timing to safety boats and the post race barbeque.
The start line for the Arc 9 Miler is the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Fishing Access on Routes 3 & 30 East of Tupper Lake (known locally as “The Crusher”). Paddlers went off in waves according to class. Guideboats and recreational canoes were first, followed by 1 and 2 person recreation or sea kayaks. Wave 3 included all of the solo stock canoes and Wave 4 had all of the faster, winged Amateur solo canoes. The tandem stock canoes, boats designed to be stable and big enough to carry gear, yet light enough to portage on a wilderness canoe trip, went off in Wave 5. The sleek, built specifically for racing, Tandem Amateur canoe teams were in Wave 6. Wave 7 featured touring kayaks up to 20 feet long and the Unlimited solo kayakers – typically the fastest boats in the event – went off last.
Participants left the Crusher and followed the Raquette River downstream around to the Route 30 Bridge before they turned left into Simond Pond and paddled to the Finish line at the Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club. The Adirondack Arc community hosted a post race barbeque and handed out awards to the top three finishers in each category.
In addition to the Adirondack Arc, The series is sponsored by: Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce, We No Nah Canoe, Franklin County Tourism, Tops Friendly Market, GRB, The Blue Moon Café, Hyde Fuel’s Nice ‘n Easy Shops, Duofold, Ace Kayaks, Mississippi Kayaks, Gauthier’s Saranac Lake Motor Lodge and MAC’S Canoe Livery in Lake Clear. The organizers would like to thank the members Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club for the use of their terrific facility on Simond Pond.
Pictures of the event taken by Newt Greiner, can be seen on his website www.Greinerphotography.com
Other races in the Adirondack Canoe Race Series include: August 14 - The 30 mile Adirondack Arc Marathon from Saranac Inn to Tupper Lake; and September 9, 10 &11 The 90 mile Adirondack Canoe Classic from Old Forge to Saranac Lake. . The Adirondack Arc is known for its creative approach to providing supports to people with developmental disabilities who live in the North Country. For the past six years the Arc Community has been providing an invaluable service to the region in their support of the Adirondack Canoe and Kayak Race Series. With two named events, The Adirondack Arc 9 Mile Canoe and Kayak Races – June 4 th and the Adirondack Arc Marathon – August 14, and behind the scenes support of other races including the 90 - Mile Adirondack Canoe Classic in September, members of the Arc Community have become a positive part of the paddle sports events in the area.
The Adirondack Arc is a non – profit, grass roots organization based in Tupper Lake, Lake Clear and Malone. The hundreds of employees of “The Arc” quietly provide a broad spectrum of services that enrich the lives of people in communities across Franklin County, Northern Hamilton County and Western Essex County. The Arc offers early childhood intervention programs through its Children’s Corner Education Centers; The Arc assists people with their living needs by managing a number of apartments and community homes throughout the Adirondacks; The Arc professional staff is available for a variety of support services for people with developmental disabilities.
More than one thousand people annually participate in the Adirondack Canoe Race Series. A trademark of the Adirondack Races has historically been willing supportive volunteers. People from the Arc community who volunteer their time make the racers feel welcome through their involvement in all aspects of the events. Arc Volunteers help out with registration, timing, water and food stations, shuttles, safety boats and the post race barbeque. The Arc crews have become a significant part of maintaining our reputation and positive history.

Adirondack 9-Miler to Tupper Lake
The Tupper Lake 9 Mile canoe and kayak races were held in conjunction with the No Octane Regatta Saturday, June 16. Participants from across New York, Vermont, New Jersey, Quebec, and as far away as Iraq came to paddle the Raquette River in the second of a series of paddle sport events sponsored by Adirondack Watershed Alliance.
The start line for the Tupper 9 Miler was the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Fishing Access on Routes 3 & 30 East of Tupper Lake. Participants left the Crusher and followed the Raquette River downstream around to the Route 30 Bridge before they turned left into Simond Pond and paddled to the finish line at the Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club. The Adirondack Watershed Alliance handed out awards to the top three finishers in each category.
This year’s event featured 71 boats, including recreation, stock and racing canoes, touring and unlimited kayaks, solo and tandem guideboats and three war canoes. One participant deserving special recognition was Pam Leary, a paddler from the area who is currently serving in the military and is stationed in Diwaniya, Iraq. Pam is on two weeks leave and thought it would be great to paddle with her sister Robin Leary in the women’s tandem amateur racing category before returning to Iraq to finish her tour.
Alain Bullard of Beaconsfield, Quebec had the fastest time of the day and was fastest among the male kayakers crossing the finish line at 59:36. Alain’s fiancée Edit Fried finished first among all female kayakers with a time of 1 hour, 11 minutes and 49 seconds. Gene Newman, owner of GRB Canoes in Canton, led the male solo canoe paddlers with a winning time of 1:07:51. Diana McIsaac, of Lake Clear was the fastest female solo paddler at 1:19:19. Norm Hecker of Queensbury and Casmir Usiatynsk of Oswego, competing as a tandem, topped all canoe racers with a time of 1:02:45. Janet Findley and David Hunter of Lake Placid led a strong field of tandem mixed canoe teams crossing the finish line at 1:03:49. The Snow Monkeys of Saranac Lake placed first in the war canoe category with a time of 1:11:30.
The series is sponsored by: We No Nah Canoe, Franklin County Tourism, The Central Adirondack Association, The Blue Moon Café, Campmor, Gauthier’s Saranac Lake Motor Lodge and MAC’S Canoe Livery in Lake Clear. The organizers would like to thank the members Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club for the use of their terrific facility on Simond Pond, The Tupper Lake Rescue Squad Dive Team for providing a sweep boat, The Adirondack Amateur Radio Communications Team, the Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce, and the volunteers who turned out to make the event a success. Following the 9 Miler, participants headed to the No Octane Regatta at Little Wolf Beach in Tupper Lake to take in the festivities being put on by the Adirondack Museum, Traditional Arts in Upstate New York, The Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce and the Adirondack Watershed Alliance.
Other races in the Adirondack Canoe Race Series include: 30-mile AWA Marathon to Tupper Lake from Saranac Inn to Tupper Lake on Aug. 12; and The 90-mile Adirondack Canoe Classic from Old Forge to Saranac Lake on Sept. 7, 8 & 9. TUPPER LAKE – Good weather and high waters helped paddlers in the Tupper Lake 9-Miler enjoy faster than normal times Saturday. An eight-person voyageur canoe led by the immediate past president of the New York Marathon Canoe Racing Association (NYMCRA), Roger Henry, of Rexford, cruised to a time of 55 minutes and 28 seconds to record the fastest overall time out of the 79 boats entered in the race. Henry’s crew improved about 10 minutes on their time last year.
The second fasted time went to the Forge Racing Team. Lead by Marc Gillespie and current NYMCRA president Holly Reynolds, their voyageur canoe finished in 56:04.
The Tupper Lake 9-Miler is the second of four races organized by the Adirondack Watershed Alliance. The race is a NYMCRA points race.
The race started at The Crusher boat access site on The Raquette River. Paddlers then headed downstream and finished up at the Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club on Simond Pond.
This race featured plenty of locals. In the solo recreation class, Saranac Lake resident Rick Costanza finished in 1:11:53 to take first place for men over 50. Lake Placid resident Skipper Beck took second in 1:18:55.
Lake Clear residents Chas and Diana Billingsley took first in C-2 Stock mixed over-50 category with a time of 1:07:56. Saranac Lake residents Rodger and Nancy Dempster took second in 1:14:03. Saranac Lake resident Karl Zaunbrechor teamed with Veronica Byers of Lake Placid to win the mixed under-50 category in 1:13:05.
In the competitive C-2 Amateur category, Bloomingdale resident Chad Kennedy teamed with Plattsburg resident Jon Santor to finish in 1:02:00 in the men’s under-50 category for first place.
Canton residents John and Gene Newman finished in 1:05:25 to win the men’s over-50 category in C-2 Amateur. The pair own GRB Newman Designs in Canton and design and make their own canoes.
In the C-1 Amateur category, Watertown resident Dave Thomas had the fastest time, finishing in 1:07:55 to win the men’s 50 to 59 age group.
The Unlimited Kayak class was one of the best competitions of the day. Charlotte Vt. resident Peter Kahn had the fastest kayak time with a 57:32 in the men’s under-50 race. Fairport resident Dan Murn finished in 58:42 to have the top time for men over-50. Pointe-Claire resident Edit Fried had the top women’s time of 1:03:20.
The American Red Cross Emergency Radio Quick Response Team, coordinated by Roland and Jackie Patnode, provided hamm radio communications during the event.
Sponsors for the Tupper Lake 9-Miler included Wenonah Canoes, Byrne Dairy, Franklin County Tourism, Shaheens’s Motel and MAC'S Canoe Livery.

The Tupper Lake canoe and kayak races were held Saturday, June 5 at the
Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club. Participants from across New York, Vermont, New
Jersey and Quebec paddled a modified course on Simond Pond and the Raquette
River in the second of a series of paddle sport events sponsored by Adirondack
Watershed Alliance.
All festivities happened at the Tupper Lake Rod and Gun club on Simond Road
this year due to the significant construction at the usual start line, the DEC
Fishing access site on Routes 3 and 30 East of Tupper Lake. Participants
crossed Simond Pond and took the channel to the Raquette River where they
turned right and paddled upstream and around the Oxbow before headind
downstream and following the river around to the Route 30 bridge before they
turned left into Simond Pond and paddled to the finish line at the Tupper Lake
Rod and Gun Club. The Adirondack Watershed Alliance handed out awards to the
top three finishers in each category.
This year’s event featured 60 boats, including recreation, stock and racing
canoes, touring and unlimited kayaks, solo and tandem guideboats and three war
canoes.
Alain Bullard of Beaconsfield, Quebec led a large field of racing
kayaks. He had the fastest time of the day and was fastest among the male
kayakers crossing the finish line at 55:20, one second ahead of Jim Mallory of
Rochester. Edit Fried, also of Beaconsfield, and the Pointe Claire Kayak Club,
finished first among all female kayakers with a time of 59:50. Joseph and
Michael Schlimmer of Cortland had the fastest tandem canoe time of the day at
1:00:20. Tony Mercurio of Tupper Lake rowed his hand crafted guideboat to
victory in 1:16: 12. Dave Thomas was the fastest of the solo paddlers crossing
the line at 1:05:32. Dog Breath, the Voyageur canoe team from Ballston Spa
turned in the fastest big boat time at 58:48. The winner of the Byrne dairy
Cash Cow raffle was Harold Stata.
The series is sponsored by: Byrne Dairy, We No Nah Canoe, Franklin County
Tourism, The Central Adirondack Association, and MAC’S Canoe Livery in Lake
Clear. The organizers would like to thank the members Tupper Lake Rod and Gun
Club for the use of their terrific facility on Simond Pond, The Adirondack
Amateur Radio Association and the volunteers who turned out to make the event a
success.
Other events in the Adirondack Canoe Race Series include: The Sundowner
Series of paddling time trials every other Tuesday of the summer; The 90-mile
Adirondack Canoe Classic from Old Forge to Saranac Lake on Sept. 10 – 12; and
the Long Lake Long Boat Regatta, September 26. For more information about the
race series call MAC’S Canoe Race Hotline at 518 – 891 - 2744.

2010
