CANOE AND KAYAK CLASSES, GENERAL RULES AND SPECIFICATIONS Note: Not all classes are offered at every race. Always check the Entry Form! |

OPEN TOURING: “Non - competitive” participant category for any canoe, kayak or guideboat. Paddlers are timed. YOUTH:Paddlers up to and including 13 years of age. Tandem recreation or stock canoes. C-2 JUNIOR: Paddlers up to and including 17 years of age or younger: Rec. or Stock canoes only. C-2 FAMILY:Paddlers must be related. One paddler is 16 years of age or younger. Recreation or Stock boats only. C-2 RECREATION:Maximum length - 17 feet 6 inches, Weight - minimum of 55 pounds from the manufacturer, no adding weight. "If it looks like a racing boat, it belongs in the Amateur Racing Class." C-2 STOCK:Included in this class are hulls similar to the Jensen 18. Minimal concave lines in the hull: no concavity in the hull from bow to stern; no concave lines in the gunwales; no concavity side to side below the 7” waterline; maximum tumblehome of 1 inch per side. Length: Maximum 18 feet 6 inches Weight: No requirement. Width: Minimum at 4- inch waterline is 15% of length. For example: An 18’6” length boat must be at least 33 3/8” wide. Minimum at 4- inch waterline is 14% of length 18" ahead and behind the widest point of the boat at the 4" waterline. Depth: Minimum depths from the manufacturer: Bow 17", Center 12 1/2" and stern 16". Chine: No hard line transitional "chine" in the hull of the boat. Chine must be at least the radius of a softball. 1) "One of kind boats are not permitted in the Stock Class." 2) The NYMCRA Stock Class is expandable. 3) The boats currently on the NYMCRA Stock Class list are: Wenonah: Jensen 17, Jensen 18, 18’ Sundowner, Minnesota II, Odyssey, Escape, and Escapade GRB Newman Designs: Traveler 17 – 5, Traveler 18 –6 Monarch Mad River Lamoille, Horizon., Bell Canoe Works Northstar, Northwind, and Northwoods., Savage River Works Susquehanna. C-4 STOCK: 4 People in a canoe designed to accommodate them. C-2 AMATEUR:All tandem canoes built for racing including boats like Wenonah’s Standard Class Racer, Competition Cruisers, and 3 X 27’s. If it looks like a racing canoe it is! Specs according to NYMCRA and USCA. SOLO RECREATION:ANY CANOE OR SEA KAYAK of any material with a maximum length of 16’ 0” and a minimum width at the 4” waterline of 22”. Must use double bladed paddle. C-1 STOCK:Maximum length - 17’ 0”, Tumblehome not to exceed 3.5” per side. No minimum weight. The current C-1 Stock list includes GRB Newman Designs Classic and Classic XL; Wenonah Advantage, Prism, Encounter and Solitude; Sawyer Summer Song, DY Special and Shock Wave; Savage River’s Otegan (modified) Bell’s Magic, and Mad River’s Independence. C-1 AMATEUR:Maximum length 18’6”, No minimum weight. Specs according to NYMCRA and USCA. TOURING KAYAK:Kayaks of any material with a maximum length of 20’ and a minimum width at the 4” waterline of 18”. UNLIMITED KAYAK:Any kayak over 20’ in length and / or less than 18” in width at the 4” waterline. STANDARD WAR CANOE:Minimum of 6 paddlers in a wooden canoe built to meet the following specifications: Maximum length 28’, Minimum width at gunwhales and 6” waterline 39”, Minimum depth of 14”. OPEN WAR CANOE: Minimum of 7 paddlers in a boat built to accommodate them - No restrictions! GUIDEBOAT:We follow the Saranac Lake rules for classes. Call us for a copy of the guidelines. AGE CLASSIFICATION: UNDER 50 YEARS OLD or OVER 50 YEARS OLD (Both people must be over 50 years old to qualify for the over 50 division) Age divisions will be established when there are 4 or more boats registered in each age group.
