24th Annual Adirondack Canoe Classic The 90 Miler September 8-10, 2006 Race Results |
|
| For the 24th year in a row the Adirondacks have played host to one of the largest travelling paddling events in the country, The 90 Mile Adirondack Canoe Classic. More than a race, the allure of paddling from Old Forge to Saranac Lake over 3 days surrounded by 250 other vessels, has become a central activity in the annual calendar of many paddlers throughout the region. Paddlers from 8 to 80, in kayaks, guideboats canoes and war canoes of every description plyed the waters of the original highways of the Adirondacks on their way to a coveted mileage pin to mark their completion of yet another voyage among the Classic Community.
The event is a huge undertaking for the paddlers. It is an equally daunting task to coordinate the myriad details that go in to keeping the paddlers safe, fed and happy. The Adirondack Watershed Alliance (AWA) was formed to administer the behind the scenes year round planning activities that go in to making the event a success, along with the rest of the Adirondack Canoe and Kayak Race Series. The AWA coordinates a series of paddlesport events in Old Forge, Long Lake, Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake. The biggest event is the 90 Miler. AWA volunteers work closely with numerous agencies, organizations and businesses along the canoe route to assure the annual success of the Adirondack Canoe Classic. The men and women of The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, (DEC) have a long standing relationship with the 90 Miler. Mike Grove and Phil Johnstone coordinated the safety boats and on water communications for the three days of paddling. The DEC provided camping for numerous participants at Lake Eaton in Long Lake, and at Fish Creek Campgrounds. The American Red Cross Emergency Radio Quick Response Team, coordinated by Roland and Jackie Patnode, provided hamm radio communication up and down the course. The Search and Rescue of the Northern Adirondacks (SARNAK) Team, coordinated by Mary Brown, provided on site first aid assistance to participants. The Saranac Lake Kiwanis did an outstanding job of providing a post race meal to paddlers in the park at the finish line. Like many other Adirondack Community driven events, Sponsors of the 90 Miler are very generous in support of the Adirondack Watershed Alliance and the 90 Miler. We would like to thank our major sponsors WENONAH Canoes, Capital District Physician’s Health Plan (CDPHP), CAMPMOR, MAC’S Canoe Livery, ACE Kayaks, The Central Adirondack Association, Franklin County Tourism, Long Lake Recreation, Hyde Fuel - Nice n’ Easy, Northern Forest Canoe Trail, Lake Placid Pub and Brewery, Adirondack Lakes and Trails, General Composites, Pat Brown’s Boat Shop, New York Marathon Canoe Racing Association, St. Lawrence Valley Paddlers, The Hotel Saranac, Grand Union Grocery Stores, The Blue Moon Café, and Old Forge Camping Resort. We would also like to thank our advertising supporters Saranac Lake Motor Lodge, Best Western Mountain Lakes Inn, The Adirondack Hotel, Motel Long Lake, Northwoods Cabins, Park Motel, Shaheen’s Motel, Sunday Pond Bed and Breakfast, Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, Kickerville Station, Adirondack Motel, Mark Kurtz Photography, Darrah Cooper Jewelers, J&J Canoe Supplies, Mississippi Kayaks, Savage Riverworks, Tupper Lake National Bank, GRB – Newman Design Canoes and Paddles, Adirondack Bank, and The Trading Post for recognizing the value of promoting their businesses to the paddlers. A special thank you goes out to The Bissell family in Long Lake, The Curry’s in Blue Mountain Lake, The Pohls of Raquette Lake Navigation Company, The Town's of Webb, Inlet, Indian Lake and Long Lake, The Village of Saranac Lake and the Village Improvement Society for their cooperation in the staging of the 90 Miler. Our final salute goes out to our dedicated cadre of volunteers who unselfishly give of their time before during and after the 90 Miler and other AWA paddling events and positively represent the region to the paddling community. Because of our volunteer core, the 90 Miler was selected as "The Race of the Year" for 2005 by the membership of The New York Marathon Canoe Racing Association! We look forward to a banner silver anniversary Adirondack Canoe Classic in 2007 and welcome new supporters to put a paddle in the water to make it happen! Brian and Grace McDonnell |
