Adirondack 9-Miler to Tupper Lake

The Tupper Lake 9 Mile canoe and kayak races were held in conjunction with the No Octane Regatta Saturday, June 16.  Participants from across New York, Vermont, New Jersey, Quebec, and as far away as Iraq came to paddle the Raquette River in the second of a series of paddle sport events sponsored by Adirondack Watershed Alliance.

The start line for the Tupper 9 Miler was the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Fishing Access on Routes 3 & 30 East of Tupper Lake. Participants left the Crusher and followed the Raquette River downstream around to the Route 30 Bridge before they turned left into Simond Pond and paddled to the finish line at the Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club.  The Adirondack Watershed Alliance handed out awards to the top three finishers in each category.

This year’s event featured 71 boats, including recreation, stock and racing canoes, touring and unlimited kayaks, solo and tandem guideboats and three war canoes.

One participant deserving special recognition was Pam Leary, a paddler from the area who is currently serving in the military and is stationed in Diwaniya, Iraq.  Pam is on two weeks leave and thought it would be great to paddle with her sister Robin Leary in the women’s tandem amateur racing category before returning to Iraq to finish her tour.

Alain Bullard of Beaconsfield, Quebec had the fastest time of the day and was fastest among the male kayakers crossing the finish line at 59:36.  Alain’s fiancée Edit Fried finished first among all female kayakers with a time of 1 hour, 11 minutes and 49 seconds. Gene Newman, owner of GRB Canoes in Canton, led the male solo canoe paddlers with a winning time of 1:07:51.  Diana McIsaac, of Lake Clear was the fastest female solo paddler at 1:19:19.  Norm Hecker of Queensbury and Casmir Usiatynsk of Oswego, competing as a tandem, topped all canoe racers with a time of 1:02:45.  Janet Findley and David Hunter of Lake Placid led a strong field of tandem mixed canoe teams crossing the finish line at 1:03:49.  The Snow Monkeys of Saranac Lake placed first in the war canoe category with a time of 1:11:30.

The series is sponsored by: We No Nah Canoe, Franklin County Tourism, The Central Adirondack Association, The Blue Moon Café, Campmor, Gauthier’s Saranac Lake Motor Lodge and MAC’S Canoe Livery in Lake Clear.  The organizers would like to thank the members Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club for the use of their terrific facility on Simond Pond, The Tupper Lake Rescue Squad Dive Team for providing a sweep boat, The Adirondack Amateur Radio Communications Team, the Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce, and the volunteers who turned out to make the event a success.

Following the 9 Miler, participants headed to the No Octane Regatta at Little Wolf Beach in Tupper Lake to take in the festivities being put on by the Adirondack Museum, Traditional Arts in Upstate New York, The Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce and the Adirondack Watershed Alliance.

Other races in the Adirondack Canoe Race Series include:  30-mile AWA Marathon to Tupper Lake from Saranac Inn to Tupper Lake on Aug. 12; and The 90-mile Adirondack Canoe Classic from Old Forge to Saranac Lake on Sept. 7, 8 & 9.  For more information about the race series call MAC’S Canoe Race Hotline at 518 – 891 - 2744.
