Over 100 boats participate in two days of paddlesport events in Saranac Lake
In spite of dire weather predictions, a great crowd turned out for the second annual Saranac Lake Flatwater Weekend. Lots of rain led to few campers and many paddlers taking to the motels around Saranac Lake between the two days of canoe and kayak racing. Due to high winds and rain, the ‘Round the Mountain Canoe and Kayak races were postponed on Saturday, and the race was moved to the Saranac Lake Fish and Game Club to run the scenic Saranac River Ramble course. When weather did not improve, race organizers, and the hearty paddlers who hung around for day two, opted for another day on the Saranac River on Sunday. Race headquarters for the weekend was the Saranac Lake Fish and Game Club where participants enjoyed a spaghetti dinner and live music, featuring local talent, on Saturday evening.
THE SATURDAY CANOE AND KAYAK RACE drew a field of 78 boats.
The fastest family class boat was paddled by Ken and Jared Streb of Rochester. Don Evans of Peru, paddled the fastest recreational kayak. Jim Amell, of Scotia, turned in the fastest
C – 1Stock time. John Voulo of South Salem, rowed his guideboat to victory. Terry Kent of Lake Placid led the field in the C-1 amateur division, Dan Karig and Herm Botzow led a competitive C-2 Stock class, Alec Davis of Ballston Lake and Roger Henry of Rexford were the fastest C-2 Amateur paddlers. Eric Brault led the kayak racers and established the fastest time of the day with a time of 1:14:52.
THE SARANAC RIVER RAMBLE Started at The Saranac Lake Fish and Game Club located on Route 3 toward Bloomingdale. The 10- mile race for canoes, kayaks and guideboats was a true ramble as paddlers went down, up and back down the river. Spectators had 3 chances to see the paddlers in action!
