The sixth annual Adirondack Arc Marathon to Tupper Lake was held Sunday August 14.   It was a warm rainy day for paddling through the Adirondack watershed for the 73 boat field of solo and tandem canoes, kayaks, guideboats, a 4-person canoe and three 6- 8-person war canoes.  The event was a New York Marathon Canoe Racing Association Points Race. The fastest time of the day went to John Ders, of South Otselic and Rich Waters of Whitesboro crossing the finish line in 3:55:42 in a two - man kayak.  Mark and Paul Olney of Westernville, posting a time of 4:01:17, paddled the fastest canoe time of the day.

The Adirondack Arc is the named sponsor.  The Arc is a non - profit family centered organization that enriches the lives of people with developmental disabilities.  Members of the Arc community volunteer in all aspects of the organization of the race.  Other sponsors include The Tupper Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, The Adirondack Watershed Alliance, MAC’S Canoe Livery, Grasse River Boatworks, Ace Kayaks, Campmor and Wenonah Canoes.  Race organizers would also like to thank the NYS DEC personnel and the Adirondack Hamm Radio Race Communications Team for their assistance during the event.

The course:  The start line was at the NYSDEC Saranac Inn Boat launch on Upper Saranac Lake. Paddlers went the length of the lake past Green Island, Buck Island, the narrows, Eagle Island, Deer Island, and Chapel Island before taking out at the 1.25 mile Indian Carry.  Paddlers went straight across Stoney Creek Ponds, and down Stoney Creek.  Stoney Creek flows into the Raquette River.  Paddlers turned right, and proceeded down stream all the way to Tupper Lake and the finish line at the Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club on Simond Pond.

Many paddlers use the race as a warm up to the Adirondack Canoe Classic, the 90-mile canoe race from Old Forge to Saranac Lake, September 9 – 11, 2005.

For more information about paddle sport events in the Adirondacks call MAC’S Canoe Race Hotline at 518- 891 – 2744.
