The 2004 'Round the Mountain Canoe and Kayak Races drew a record field of 106 vessels to the Ampersand Bay Resort for the start of the 10.5 - mile race on the lakes and river around Dewey Mountain in Saranac Lake. The race was part of the New York Marathon Canoe Racing Association Points Series and the second race in the Top of the State Series. The region was well represented in the winner's circle. Many local paddlers finished strong in their classes against some of the best paddlers in the Northeast!
The 'Round the Mountain is the second race in the Adirondack Canoe Race Series of events organized cooperatively by MAC'S Canoe Livery, The Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and the Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce. Other sponsors include Ace Kayaks, Wenonah Canoes, The Blue Moon Café, Grasse River Boatworks and Gauthier's Saranac Lake Motor Inn. The next event in the series will be the Adirondack Arc 9 Miler to Tupper Lake on Saturday, June 5. Race organizers thank the Ampersand Bay Resort for hosting the start, the Red Cross Amateur Radio Quick Response Team for communication assistance during the race and the volunteers who helped out with safety boats, timing and shuttles during the event.
Marc Gillespie and Paul Olney turned in the fastest time of the day in their two- person Pro boat at 1:25:10. The fastest kayak was David Wiltey posting a time of 1:27:36. Complete results were as follows:
