'Round the Mountain Canoe and Kayak Races
May 18th 2003 - Ampersand Bay to Saranac Lake Village, NY

Saranac Lake NY, May 18th 2003 - 'Round the Mountain Canoe and Kayak Races draw varied field of 93 boats.

Paddlers from across the region circled Dewey Mountain on water Sunday in the sixteenth annual running of The ‘Round the Mountain Canoe Race. There were guideboats, an assortment of kayaks and a wide variety of one and two person canoes entered in the third of a series of Adirondack Races co – sponsored by the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, The Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce and MAC’S Canoe Livery in Lake Clear.

The Ampersand Bay Resort and Boat Club, on Lower Saranac Lake, hosted the race start. Paddlers covered the 10.5 - mile course by heading out on to the Lower Lake, passing Eagle and Sable Islands to the Saranac River. Participants went under the Route 3 Bridge and headed to town via the Lower Locks, through Oseetah Lake and on to the finish line in the Village of Saranac Lake. Ken Fontana of the Blue Moon Café, was on hand at the finish line with complementary Cold River Coffee and snacks for the enjoyment of the paddlers prior to the distribution of awards.

The winner of the vacation package donated by Doug Brownell of the Saranac Lake Motor Inn was Soern Peterson of Clarence Creek, Canada.

Special thanks to Grace McDonnell for pre race administration, The American Red Cross Emergency Response Communication team and the Tri-Lakes Amateur Radio Club for communication assistance; The Saranac Lake Village Police Department, and the volunteers who assisted with registration, timing, and safety out on the course.

The 2003 ‘Round the Mountain Canoe and Kayak Races are dedicated to the competitive spirit of Terry Crannell of Queensbury, an avid canoe racer who died on 5/13/03 after a long and courageous fight with cancer. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends.
