LONG LAKE – Thirty-four boats, including a dragon boat and five war canoes,
turned out for the second annual Long Lake Long Boat Regatta Saturday.
The race is the final event of the season for the Adirondack Watershed Alliance
canoe and kayak racing series. The event featured three separates races, including a one-mile
   youth competition, a 10-mile race and a 20-mile long-boat competition.
In the feature event, the North American War Canoe Championships, a boat
captained by Roger Henry, of Rexford, took first place. Henry’s canoe, which was
coming off a first place finish in the Adirondack Canoe Classic, set the pace with a time
of two hours, thirty-two minutes and thirty-three seconds.
While Henry’s boat outdistanced its competition by nearly eight minutes, the race
for second place was much closer. Team MAC, captained by Lake Clear resident and
Race Director Brian McDonnell, battled the length of the course with the CAMPMOR
team led by Russ Rayot. In the end, Team MAC powered ahead to take second place with
a time of 2:40:16, outdistancing CAMPOR by a mere 18 seconds.
In the 20-mile C-4 championships, Ontario’s Peter Ross led his team to first place
with a time of 2:45:04. Second place went to a team of Tri-Lakes residents led by
Saranac Lake’s Jim Minnie. Minnie, Lake Clear’s Chas Billingsley and Diana McIssac
and Saranac Lake’s Sandy Waters finished with a time of 2:53:55.
In the Anything Goes competition, also competing on the 20-mile course, a
dragon boat containing 17 paddlers from Kahnawake, Quebec took first place with a time
   of 2:22:44.
In the 10-mile race, Fairport’s Dan Murn finished in 1:23:08 to take the top
overall time and first place in the unlimited kayak class.
Clifton Park’s Nancy Eberle, racing in the women’s touring kayak class, topped
all female competitors with a time of 1:52:12.
Glen’s Falls resident William Mannis took first in the 1-person guideboat class
   with a 2:02:42 finish.
Kahnawake’s Jesse Rice, racing in C-1 amateur, had the fastest canoe time with a
   1:37:05.
Fairport’s Tom Murn took first place in the youth race.
