Near perfect weather conditions inspired a number of first time paddlers, New York Marathon Canoe Association Points Contenders, and a number of local participants. The race started at Ampersand Bay Resort on Lower Saranac Lake. From Ampersand Bay, paddlers headed westward up the lake to the mouth of the Saranac River; proceeded down river, negotiating a short carry around the lower locks, then paddled through Oseetah Lake and Lake Flower, to the finish at Riverfront Park. (Approximate distance 10.5 miles.) The ‘Round the Mountain was designated a New York Marathon Canoe Race Association (NYMCRA) Points Series Race attracting many of the hottest paddlers in the state to Saranac Lake for friendly competition and incredible scenery. The fastest family class boat was paddled by Richard Stockwell, Jr. and his grandfather Ray Morris of South Glens Falls crossing the finish line in 2:11:21. Gerhard Munger of Lowville powered the fastest guideboat in a time of 1:48:18. Benoit Gauthier of Gloucester, Ontario paddled the fastest kayak and recorded the fastest time of the day at 1:27:15. Terry Kent of Lake Placid paddled the fastest solo canoe of the day keeping pace with the kayaks and crossing the finish line in 1:28:51. Chas Billingsley of Lake Clear, and Bruce Kennedy of Peru paddle the fastest two person Stock canoe in 1:37:16. Roger Henry and Brian Young paddled the fastest amateur racing canoe in 1:30:02. Jan Perrin of Manoria, Wisconsin and Joan Henry of Rexford were the fastest women’s canoe team of the day with a time of 1:37:28. The leader of the solo stock class was Becky Sutter of Saranac Lake for the women (1:49:23) and Dave Thomas of Watertown for the men (1:43:56.) The Plaid Paddlers captured the 4-person canoe category in a time of 1:45:19. The Snow Monkeys, a ten-person war canoe team from Saranac Lake, captained by Randy Young, used teamwork to cruise across the finish line in a time of 1:53:48. Marie Godbout and Elizabeth McMahon of Pointe Claire, Quebec cruised in their 2-person kayak around the course in 2:12:27 for first place in their class. The Adirondack Canoe Race Series is organized through The Adirondack Watershed Alliance. The AWA promotes water related events and activities; is developing a stewardship network to enhance recreational opportunities and provide outdoor employment opportunities. R ace sponsors include: MAC’S Canoe Livery, Wenonah Canoes, Cold River Coffee at the Blue Moon Café, Ampersand Bay Resort, Gauthier’s Saranac Lake Motor Inn, Mississippi Kayaks, Campmor, and Adirondack Motel. Thank you to the Volunteers and the Adirondack Amateur Radio Club for providing communications during the event. The next race in the series is the Tupper Lake 9 Miler, June 16. The 9 Miler will be part of the No Octane Regatta activities being organized in Tupper Lake by the Adirondack Museum, Traditional Arts of Upstate New York (TAUNY) the Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce and the Adirondack Watershed Alliance.
