For more information contact Brian McDonnell at 518 – 891 – 2744 The seventh annual Adirondack Arc Marathon to Tupper Lake was held Sunday August 13. It was a warm sunny day for paddling through the Adirondack Waterways for the 72 boat field of solo and tandem canoes, kayaks, guideboats, 4-person canoe and 6- 8-person war canoes. The event was a New York Marathon Canoe Racing Association Points Race. The fastest time of the day went to Jeff Pedersen and Neal Sand in their 2-man canoe crossing the finish line in 4:01:35. The fastest solo canoe was Bruce Lee at 4:07: 05. The fastest Kayak was Roger Gocking at 4:09:58. Phil Saunders and Gerhard Munger powered the fastest guideboat at 5:07:32. The fastest War Canoe was Team Henry in 4:11:50 and the fastest C-4 was Team Campmor Four in 4:26:38. The Adirondack Arc is the named sponsor. The Arc is a non - profit family centered organization that enriches the lives of people with developmental disabilities. Other sponsors include The Tupper Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, The Adirondack Watershed Alliance, MAC’S Canoe Livery, Ace Kayaks, Campmor, Wenonah Canoes, and the Blue Moon Cafe. Race organizers would also like to thank the Adirondack Hamm Radio Race Communications Team and the Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club for their assistance during the event. The course: The start line was at the NYSDEC Saranac Inn Boat launch on Upper Saranac Lake. Paddlers went the length of the lake past Green Island, Buck Island, the narrows, Eagle Island, Deer Island, and Chapel Island before taking out at the 1 mile Indian Carry. Paddlers went straight across Stoney Creek Ponds, and down Stoney Creek. Stoney Creek flows into the Raquette River. Paddlers turned right, and proceeded down stream all the way to Tupper Lake and the finish line at the Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club on Simond Pond. The Adirondack Watershed Alliance (AWA) organized the event. The AWA promotes water related events and activities; is developing a stewardship network to enhance recreational opportunities and provide outdoor employment opportunities. Brian and Grace McDonnell welcome your involvement in assuring that paddlesport events remain a part of the Adirondack experience. The AWA is currently involved in river cleanups, The Adirondack Loon Census, paddling clinics, and stewardship projects. Many paddlers use the race as a warm up to the Adirondack Canoe Classic, the 90-mile canoe race from Old Forge to Saranac Lake, September 9 – 11, 2005. For more information about paddle sport events in the Adirondacks call the AWA Canoe Race Hotline at 891 – 2744. |
