The Adirondack Watershed Alliance teamed up with the Long Lake Recreation Department to bring back one of the oldest and most demanding paddling events in the region – the 40 Mile Adirondack Challenge from Long Lake to Tupper Lake. Over 30 paddlers met the challenge. High water, favorable weather conditions and strong competition led to some very fast times. There were 3 four-person teams competing in 20-foot long Kevlar boats, pro boats, kayaks, solo and tandem canoes in the field.

The fastest time of the day for the 40 miler went to pro paddlers Joe Shaw of Worthington, Massachusetts and Dan Gelinas of Trois Rivieres, Quebec, there time was 5:09:26. Joan and Roger Henry of Rexford, Jan Perrin of Johnsonville, and David Hunter of Lake Placid crossing the finish line at 5:09:51 powered the fastest C – 4. The fastest solo canoe was Dave Thomas of Watertown, 5:51:55. The fastest Stock boat was Becky Sutter and Guy Middleton of Saranac Lake, 5:56:11. The fastest kayaker was David Fay, 5:44:19. Complete results are listed below.

The Adirondack Challenge 9 Mile Canoe and Kayak Races to Tupper Lake were also held on Saturday. There was a strong contingent of family class paddlers; solo and tandem kayakers; solo, tandem, four-person and 7 person canoe teams. The start line for the 9 Miler was the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Fishing Access on Routes 3 & 30 East of Tupper Lake (known locally as “The Crusher”). Paddlers went off in waves according to class and paddled down the Raquette River to the Tip Top Town and the finish line at the Tupper Lake Rod, Gun and Sports Club.
